Why Athletes Work with a Mental Skills Coach
Athletes don’t pursue mental skills training because something is wrong. They pursue it because they know there’s another level they can reach.
At Revelation Sports Counseling, many of the athletes we work with are already successful. They’ve experienced moments of excellence—winning races, making clutch plays, and rising to the occasion when it matters most. But they also know that performing at their best consistently is a different challenge.
The goal isn’t just to perform at your best once. It’s to develop mental skills to do it consistently, especially when the pressure is on.
Here's the truth: mental toughness is trainable. That's why top athletes across all sports, from basketball and tennis to soccer and track, are making mental training a regular part of their routine.
Revelation works with middle school, high school, college athletes, as well as younger athletes from 3rd grade on up, and professional athletes. If you play an individual sport like tennis, swimming, or track and field, this space was built with you in mind too.

Pre-Game Nerves
Playing Present, ‘What's important now?’ is one of our pillars. The concept is about staying in the present and being able to decipher what really matters amidst the incredible amount of noise that can surround an athlete. We teach you to focus on what's in your control. You can't control results and outcomes. So the first thing we try to do is let go of this obsession of focusing on results and outcomes. Take that incredible drive you have and focus on the things you can control. Focus on attitude, focus on effort, focus on your focus. Train yourself to be in the moment and focus on the task at hand. This kind of focus and concentration training carries over from the court to everywhere else in life.
Challenge
Shooting Slumps
Mind Gym: Our Mind Gym is a structured mental conditioning program for athletes that helps strengthen focus, confidence, emotional control, and resilience. Through techniques such as visualization, positive self-talk, goal setting, mindfulness, and pressure simulations, athletes learn to manage distractions and perform consistently under stress. Just as physical training strengthens the body, our Mind Gym builds mental toughness by teaching athletes to respond to adversity with discipline, composure, and confidence.
Challenge
Athlete Burnout
We can help athletes manage and prevent burnout by teaching practical strategies to cope with pressure, recover mentally, and reconnect with their purpose for playing. Through goal-setting, stress-management techniques, confidence building, mindfulness, and healthy routines, athletes learn to balance performance expectations with rest and personal well-being. Our mental skills coaches can also help athletes recognize early signs of burnout—such as emotional exhaustion, declining motivation, irritability, and reduced enjoyment, while creating a personalized plan to restore energy and enthusiasm. By providing a supportive, nonjudgmental space, the coach helps athletes develop resilience, establish healthy boundaries, and maintain a sustainable relationship with their sport.
— What Makes This Different
Where Mental Skills Training Meets Clinical Expertise
There are performance coaches, and there are licensed therapists. Dr. Kareem Ayodeji brings both worlds together.
A Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 2012, Dr. Ayodeji understands the psychological and emotional demands athletes face. As a former walk-on basketball player at the University of Connecticut, along with years of coaching and teaching multiple sports, he brings firsthand athletic experience to his work with athletes.
This combination offers something unique: mental skills training grounded in both clinical expertise and real-world athletic experience.
An athlete’s performance is about more than physical ability. Stress, anxiety, confidence, relationships, and life experiences can all influence how an athlete performs under pressure. Understanding these connections allows Dr. Ayodeji to look beyond the scoreboard and recognize the factors that may be helping or holding back an athlete’s development.
Through evidence-based strategies, mental skills development, and a growth-oriented approach, Revelation Sports Counseling helps athletes strengthen their confidence, navigate pressure, build resilience, and develop the tools to perform at their best. And when challenges extend beyond sports, Dr. Ayodeji has clinical training to recognize those needs and provide appropriate support.
Because developing a stronger athlete starts with developing a stronger mind and supporting the whole person behind the performance.
